In English, the sentences can be in direct or reported speech. The indirect one doesn't refer to the one you all have been taught in Indonesian school. It's completely wrong in terminology. It's used more for politeness speech, the polite form of a sentece. Here's the example:

Direct: He asked, 'Have you got all day for this?'
Reported: He asked that if he had got all day for that.
Indirect: He asked, 'I wonder if you have got all day for this?'

Reported: He asked when she arrived.
Direct: He asked, 'when does she arrive?'
Indirect: He asked, 'may I know when she arrives?'
