In the nineteenth century Islam developed rapidly in the area of minangkabau. Islamic leaders try to follow the teachings of Islam according to al-quran and hadith. Their movement is then called Padri movement. This movement aims to improve the Minangkabau society and restore them to be in accordance with the teachings of Islam. This movement received a good reception among scholars, but got opposition from the Adat.
Commonly the war of padre is:
a) The conflict between the Padri and the Adat.
b) The Dutch help the Adat.
The first war between the padre and the adat occurred in the old city, then extended to other cities. Leaders of kaumpadri include Dato’ Bandaro, Tuanku Nak Cerdik, Tuanku Nan Renceh, Dato’ Malim Basa (Imam Bonjol). The Adat is led by Dato' Sati. In the war, they asked for help to the Dutch.
The battles can be divided into two stages.
A) the first stage (1821-1825)
At this stage, wars occurred between the padre and the indigenous people assisted by the Dutch. Facing a fully armed dutch, the padri used guerrilla tactics. Dutch occupations became more difficult, then persuaded the padri people to make peace. On 15th of November 1825 there was a peace treaty and the Dutch army was withdrawn from Sumatra and focused on crushing the Diponegoro resistance in Java.
B) the second stage (1830-1837)
After the war in ponerogo finished, the Dutch began to break the agreement and the battle padri raged again. In this war, the padri and the adat united against the Dutch.
At first the padri got many victories. In 1834 the Dutch deployed troops to pound the center of defense of the padri in bonjol. On 25 October 1837, Tuanku Imam Bonjol was caught, then exiled in Minahasa until his death. With the surrender of Tuanku Imam Bonjol does not mean the war is over, the war continues even though it no longer interfere with the Dutch business to rule over Minangkabau.
